Disney gets most of the first-timer attention, but Universal Orlando has quietly become a destination in its own right — especially for families with older kids, thrill-seekers, and anyone with a Harry Potter fan in the house. If you’re considering Universal for the first time, here’s what actually matters before you start booking.
Universal is now four parks
This is the biggest thing that’s changed recently. Universal Orlando is no longer a quick two-day add-on. As of 2026, there are four parks:
- Universal Studios Florida — movie-and-TV themed rides, including Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.
- Islands of Adventure — the roller-coaster-heavy park, home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade.
- Epic Universe — the brand-new park (more on this below) with five immersive worlds.
- Volcano Bay — the water park. Heads up: it’s scheduled for a long seasonal closure starting October 26, 2026, with reopening planned around April 1, 2027 — so check dates if a water-park day is on your list.
How many days do you need?
For a first family trip that includes Epic Universe, plan for three to four Universal days. Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure can each take a full day (or you can combine them with a park-to-park ticket), and Epic Universe really deserves a full day on its own, ideally with a little breathing room.
Trying to do all of it in two days means sprinting, and sprinting with kids is how vacations go sideways. Better to pick your priorities than to cram.
The Harry Potter situation (it’s a big deal)
There are now three Wizarding World areas across the resort: Diagon Alley in Universal Studios, Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure, and a third Wizarding World inside Epic Universe. If you have a Potter superfan, this is the trip.
Two things first-timers should know. First, the Hogwarts Express train connects Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade — but you need a park-to-park ticket to ride it, because it physically moves you between the two parks. Second, as of 2026, a 3-day-or-longer park-to-park ticket lets you visit all three Wizarding Worlds in a single day for the first time ever. Worth knowing if that’s your family’s whole reason for going.
Getting around the resort
Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure are right next to each other — you can walk between them through the CityWalk dining-and-shopping area. Easy.
Epic Universe is different. It sits on a separate campus, not within walking distance of the other two. You’ll take a complimentary Universal bus from the CityWalk transportation hub (or drive yourself), and you should budget 30 to 45 minutes each way. Plan your Epic Universe day as its own thing rather than assuming you’ll bounce back and forth.
Is Universal good for little kids, or just big kids?
Both, with a caveat. Universal leans a little more thrill-forward than Disney overall — more big coasters, more intense rides. But there’s plenty for younger children too, especially in Super Nintendo World and the How to Train Your Dragon land at Epic Universe, plus a whole kids’ area at Islands of Adventure.
If your crew is mostly under 7, Universal absolutely works — you’ll just want someone to help you map the right rides so the day fits their ages. (That’s the kind of thing I do.)
A budget heads-up
Like Disney, Universal has its share of upcharges: Express Pass to skip lines, interactive wands in the Wizarding World, Power-Up Bands at Epic Universe, premium dining. None of it is required, but it adds up if you say yes to everything. Decide ahead of time what’s worth it for your family.
